The distributor uses one of several different systems to create the timing of the ignition spark.

Kettering system distributor
In the Kettering System, contact breaker points are used to make and break the primary ignition circuit.
This system also relies on mechanical weights to advance the ignition spark as the engine speed increases.

Pulse generator distributor
Electronic type distributors have replaced contact breaker point type distributors.
One variation of the electronic distributor is the Induction type that uses magnetic fields to make and break the ignition circuit.
This is a pulse generator Induction type distributor.

Hall effect generator distributor
Another type of electronic distributor unit is known as the 'Hall Effect' generator.

Electronic control unit
On engines operating with a computerized engine management system, the ignition advance function is controlled by an 'Electronic Control Unit', or E.C.U.

Optical sensor unit
Another variation to the electronic distributor is the 'Optical Sensor' unit.
